Delhi University which had earlier scrapped ECA category from this year's DU Admission 2020 process, has now announced that it will conduct admission to all categories under it.

Delhi University Admissions 2020: The Delhi University Standing Committee of the Academic Council has announced that it has decided to conduct the DU Admissions 2020 to all categories under the Extra-Curricular Activity (ECA) quota on the basis of the self-attested certificates submitted by the candidate. Earlier, considering the coronavirus situation in the country, the varsity had decided to scrap ECA admission, barring National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS). The varsity had said that it will not be able to hold trials for Sports and ECA categories, as it will be difficult to follow the health and safety guidelines issued by Health Ministry to contain the spread of COVID-19. The University had said that it has decided to give admission under Sports Quota only to those who will be submitting the government-approved certificates. Since these certificates do not exist for ECA categories such as dance, theatre, music, etc, the decision was taken to scrap it altogether.

However, Several artists like Birju Maharaj, Geeta Chandran had petitioned the Vice President, the chancellor of the varsity, to reconsider the decision to scrap ECA category from this years admission process. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu had then urged the Delhi University authorities to retain the procedure for admission under the Extra-Curricular Activities quota by earmarking seats for talented artists.

The University Administration on July 11 said that it will work on the inclusion of ECA in the admissions for this academic year. After this, a meeting of Sub-Committee for Sports and ECA was conducted on July 17, where it was decided that the performance trial marks (75) be clubbed with the certificate marks (25), and aspirants will be evaluated on the basis of self-attested copies of certificates.

Aspirants would be marked out of 100, depending on various factors, including whether they have received training and for how long, whether they have participated in competitions and at which level.

The decision was given the green signal by the Admission Committee in its meeting on July 18 and by the Standing Committee on July 21.

“The sub-committee on admissions brought the proposal to the standing committee to begin admissions under ECA category on the basis of certificates only by excluding trials (offline as well as online). I strongly objected to it as there is no way of authenticating the credibility of the ECA certificates, unlike sports, as there is no government-approved institutions issuing the certificates and this would do injustice to genuine candidates,” said Arun Atree, a member of the Standing Committee.
