AWS Partners with Shikshagraha to Transform Education for One Million Schools in India by 2030

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will provide cloud computing technology to power Shikshagraha’s technology-driven improvement initiatives across India. Shikshagraha is fostering collaboration among government bodies, local civil society organisations (CSOs), youth, and community-based groups to lead need-based school improvement programs and solutions. The initiative aims to impact 40 million children across 100 districts by 2030 and is already active in states and union territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kashmir, Odisha, Punjab, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh.

Public schooling in India faces numerous challenges in its efforts to provide quality education to all students. Interventions by various stakeholders, while impactful, often operate in isolation, limiting the sharing of best practices across regions. Additionally, educators and school leaders, who are most familiar with the problems, lack the agency to create and implement tailored solutions.

The problem Shikshagraha aims to solve – improving all public schools in India – is one of scale. While application of technology is the answer to address this challenge, we also know we can deliver the technology intervention only through cloud computing,” said Vijayashree Urs, Chief Technology Officer - ShikshaLokam, one of the co-builders of the Shikshagraha movement.

Shikshagraha’s solutions and tools will be hosted on AWS, utilising the world’s most widely adopted cloud platform to implement a pay-as-you-go model for its technology infrastructure. This approach will enable seamless collaboration with multiple CSO partners to address diverse needs across districts.

Over the next five years, Shikshagraha will leverage AWS’s on-demand cloud computing services to support school improvement programs in 100 districts, optimize technology costs through AWS’s cost-saving tools, and secure its platform using AWS security services. Additionally, AWS will host the micro-improvements repository, facilitating the efficient capture and display of improvements across schools.

Key AWS services supporting Shikshagraha include Amazon Managed Service for Apache Druid for a cost-effective and resilient hosting environment, Amazon OpenSearch Service for real-time data search and analysis, Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (MSK) for real-time data ingestion, Amazon ElastiCache for Redis to ensure sub-millisecond latency for internet-scale applications, and AWS security groups to manage incoming and outgoing traffic as a virtual firewall.
