Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani has decided to extend its full tuition fee scholarship programme to the top 1,000 BITSAT rankers from the 2027 admission session. Last year, the institute introduced the scheme for the top 500 candidates in BITSAT 2026. According to Group Vice Chancellor V Ramgopal Rao, students with an annual family income of up to Rs 20 lakh will be eligible for the scholarship. Eligible candidates will receive a 100% tuition fee waiver for all four years of their undergraduate programme under the scheme.
However, students will have to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 7.5 at their respective campuses to continue receiving the scholarship. The scholarship covers tuition fees for four years, subject to meeting the requirements. Note that it is not a complete waiver of all admission, hostel or other charges. The expanded scholarship programme aims to make BITS Pilani admissions more accessible to academically meritorious students, irrespective of their financial background.
BITS Pilani Expands Scholarship Coverage from 500 to 1,000 Students
BITS Pilani introduced its tuition-blind admission initiative for the top 500 BITSAT rankers in the 2026 admission session. Under this programme, eligible students from families with an annual income of up to Rs 20 lakh were offered a full tuition fee waiver. The institute has now decided to double the number of students covered under the initiative from 500 to 1,000 starting in 2027. According to V Ramgopal Rao, the scholarship initiative has also influenced admission decisions among high-ranking candidates.
In 2026, the number of eligible students from the top 500 BITSAT rankers who joined the institute increased by 50%. The BITSAT score required to fall within this group also increased from 314 to 324. Group Vice Chancellor also noted the positive impact extended to candidates ranked between 501 and 1,000, who were not covered earlier. The number of students joining BITS Pilani from the overall top 1,000 rank bracket also increased by 50%.
BITS Pilani Distributes Rs 190 crore in Scholarships & Financial Assistance
BITS Pilani has also reported significant spending on student financial assistance. During the 2025-26 academic year, the institute distributed approximately Rs 190 crore through scholarships, fee concessions and fellowships across its undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Of this amount, around Rs 101 crore was allocated to undergraduate students through merit-based, merit-cum-need and international student scholarship programmes.
The institute said that approximately one in four students across its campuses received some form of financial assistance. With the expanded scholarship programme from 2027, BITS Pilani aims to increase opportunities for high-performing students who may otherwise find the cost of education a barrier to admission.
