Cybersecurity Skills Make Computer Science a Top Choice for BTech Students: Area Director & Dean, NIIT University

In an exclusive conversation with Shiksha.com, Prof. Debashis Sengupta, Area Director & Dean-Technology Initiatives, NIIT University shared insights into the plans for next five years, highlighting efforts to adapt the curriculum to keep pace with rapidly evolving technology and industry demands, among other initiatives.

Q: What is your vision for NIIT University for the next five years?
Prof. Sengupta: We aim to build a community of forward-thinkers who will leverage cutting-edge advancements to solve real-world challenges. Our vision is to foster an environment where innovation and technology would converge to create an impact that would be meaningful. We are working towards building responsible citizens by instilling a culture of seamlessness in all facets of life. By focusing on sustainability, inclusivity, and collaboration, we envision developing solutions that will not only drive economic growth but also address global issues. Emphasising continuous learning and adaptability will be crucial for the students, to ensure that we stay ahead of the rapidly evolving industry trends and contribute to the industry and society.
Q: How do you plan to enhance the global standing of NIIT University's Engineering and Technology department in terms of research and innovation?
Prof. Sengupta: We plan to focus on fostering a research-driven culture that encourages groundbreaking innovation. Our strategy focuses on three core areas, i.e fostering cutting-edge research, expanding international collaborations, and promoting innovation on the campus. This will involve establishing strategic partnerships with the leading tech companies and research institutions and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. These collaborations will facilitate knowledge exchange, joint research projects, and access to international funding. Lastly, we will promote innovation by encouraging interdisciplinary projects and entrepreneurship. This includes creating incubators and innovation hubs to support startups and technology transfer.
Q: How is NIIT University's Engineering and Technology department adapting its curriculum to keep pace with rapidly changing technology and industry demands?
Prof. Sengupta: The foundation of NIIT University rests on its four core principles of promoting education that is industry-linked, technology-based, research-driven and seamless. We emphasise a flexible, modular approach that allows for frequent updates and the inclusion of practical, hands-on experiences. Collaboration with industry partners ensures our curriculum reflects the current demands and prepares our graduates to cope with the future needs of the industry. Additionally, we incorporate real-world projects and problem-solving scenarios to prepare students for the dynamic career landscapes, ensuring they acquire relevant skills and knowledge to excel in a rapidly evolving technological environment.
Q: Can you share recent initiatives taken by NIIT University's Engineering and Technology Department to promote interdisciplinary research and education?
Prof. Sengupta: By fostering a multidisciplinary approach, the department integrates diverse fields such as Quantum Computing, LLM & GenAI, New Gen Networks (5G, 6G & SDN), AR & VR, Internet of Things, Spatial Computing, Nanotechnology, Green Chemistry, Bioremediation, Educational Technology, and Gender Studies. Current projects are focused on generating impactful knowledge and solutions with societal applications, reflecting NU's commitment to advancing both fundamental and applied research.
These efforts are complemented by collaborations with global research institutes, we host workshops and seminars that encourage knowledge exchange across disciplines, enabling students and faculty to explore and address complex, multifaceted challenges holistically.
Q: What are the most common engineering courses opted by students?
Prof. Sengupta: Computer Science and Engineering is increasingly popular, particularly among students pursuing a BTech degree. One of the most chosen branches is BTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. As industries harness the power of big data, the demand for skills in data interpretation, data visualization and management has surged. Students opt for this course to stay ahead of changing trends in the industry. Popular Cybersecurity skills are Threat Intelligence, Cloud Security, Blockchain Security, IoT security, VAPT and Cybercrime & Cyber law.
Q: What measures are being implemented to ensure the mental and emotional well-being of the students at NIIT University's Engineering and Technology Department?
Prof. Sengupta: At NIIT University to ensure proper help, the university has established โMitradwar,โ a dedicated counselling service and Student Support Center. Here, a professional counsellor is available Monday to Friday to assist students with their concerns and provide tailored support. Additionally, Mitradwar also facilitates access to faculty for further advice, ensuring a comprehensive support system to help students navigate challenges and maintain their well-being during their academic journey.
