The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay alumnus Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi have launched: WINGS (Women INspiring Growth in STEM) scholarship, an initiative aimed at empowering women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The scholarship will provide opportunity to women in STEM. WINGS will catalyse for the creation of similar impactful programs for women’s education in India.
WINGS, first-of-its-kind, will offer tuition support to undergraduate women students in STEM at IIT Bombay. This will also ensure that economic limitations do not restrict their academic ambition. It is expected that the initiative will inspire young women across the country to opt for STEM education. The first cohort will begin in the 2026–2027 academic year, and the programme will encourage students from rural communities to apply to IIT Bombay.
Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, said, “Financial constraints should never determine a student's future. It is a step towards a equitable and diverse student community at IIT Bombay, that will shape the future of science and technology.”
Bharat Desai stated, “Education is the most powerful tool for change. By removing financial obstacles, we are unleashing the talent and determination of young women who will drive the future of innovation and progress in India”.

The institute offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to a maximum of 25% of the sanctioned intake of UG and MSc students. Facilities of Free Messing is also available to SC/ ST students under which they get an exemption from paying the tuition fees. In addition, the Office of the Dean Alumni & Corporate Relations manages the Named scholarship endowed by the alumni of the Institute and other wellwishers. IIT Bombay offers merit-based scholarships. The scholarship is offered based on the performance of the students in the semester exam. Approximately 20% of the students are beneficiaries of the various scholarships are from various endowment funds. Additionally, a few other scholarships are available centrally from IIT-B. Besides, SC and ST candidates are exempted from paying the tuition fees.

Yes, IIT Bombay offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to UG students. It is awarded to a maximum of 25% of sanctioned intake. For Dual degree, it is available only up to fourth year.
Merit Criterion: For new entrants of BDes their UCEED Rank, will be the criterion. In subsequent years, the criterion will be their academic performance during the preceding academic year.
Means Criterion: The parental income is the basis for the ‘means' criterion of the scholarship. At present, students with parents annual gross income from all sources for the previous Financial year does not exceed INR 5 Lacs are eligible to apply for Merit cum Means Scholarship.
