IIT Bombay Alumnus Introduces "WINGS" Scholarship

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay alumnus Bharat Desai and Neerja Sethi have launched: WINGS (Women INspiring Growth in STEM) scholarship, an initiative aimed at empowering women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The scholarship will provide opportunity to women in STEM. WINGS will catalyse for the creation of similar impactful programs for women’s education in India.

WINGS, first-of-its-kind, will offer tuition support to undergraduate women students in STEM at IIT Bombay. This will also ensure that economic limitations do not restrict their academic ambition. It is expected that the initiative will inspire young women across the country to opt for STEM education. The first cohort will begin in the 2026–2027 academic year, and the programme will encourage students from rural communities to apply to IIT Bombay.

Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, said, “Financial constraints should never determine a student's future. It is a step towards a equitable and diverse student community at IIT Bombay, that will shape the future of science and technology.”

Bharat Desai stated, “Education is the most powerful tool for change. By removing financial obstacles, we are unleashing the talent and determination of young women who will drive the future of innovation and progress in India”.
