The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is conducting a free online course on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) through the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) platform.

Β The course isΒ best suited for UG and PG students who have a basic knowledge of aerodynamics. Those who wish to obtain certificates will have to pay Rs 1,000 and take an examination on October 24, 2021.Β

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is conducting a free online course on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) through the NationalΒ ProgrammeΒ on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) platform.Β TheΒ online course called design of fixed-wing UAV is an eight-week course and is free of cost. TheΒ programmeΒ began on August 23, 2021, and will go on till October 15, 2021. The course isΒ most suitedΒ for undergraduate and postgraduate students who have a basic knowledge of aerodynamics.Β Those who wish to obtain certificates will have to pay Rs 1,000 and take an examination on October 24, 2021.Β Candidates will only get e-certificates as no hard copies will be issued.Β 

The course will be conducted by Dr SubrahmanyamΒ SaderlaΒ who has a BTech in aeronautical engineering fromΒ Jawaharlal Nehru Technological UniversityΒ (JNTU), Hyderabad in 2008, MTech and PhD in aerospace engineering from IIT Kanpur during 2010 and 2015, respectively.Β Β

What all will be taught during the course

  • Introduction to fixed-wing UAVs, design, and basic design parameters.Β 
  • DesignΒ  Algorithm: Case study, and design algorithm: mission requirements.Β 
  • FeasibleΒ  design parameters, and configuration layout: Airfoil selection,Β  configuration layout: Planform geometry selection.Β 
  • WeightΒ  and CG estimation, analytical parameter estimation, and analyticalΒ  parameter estimation.Β 
  • PerformanceΒ  and stability analysis, simulation and detailedΒ sising.Β 
  • EstimationΒ  of inertial properties using 3D modelling, and prototypeΒ  fabrication.Β 
  • WindΒ  tunnel testing, and aerodynamicΒ characterisationΒ  through wind tunnel testing.Β
