IIT Roorkee Introduces MTech in E-Waste Management

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, in partnership with the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) Hyderabad, has announced the launch of a new MTech programme in E-Waste Management. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen national capabilities and develop specialized expertise to tackle the growing environmental and technological challenges posed by electronic waste. It aligns with India’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and advancing a technology-driven economy.

As part of this collaboration, IIT Roorkee and C-MET have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together in key areas such as advanced materials research, e-waste recycling, and the development of innovative technologies. Through this joint effort, both institutions aim to contribute meaningfully to addressing one of the most pressing environmental concerns of the digital age while also supporting the country’s broader goals in research, sustainability, and technological innovation.

The partnership further opens avenues for student internships, joint doctoral research, academic resource sharing, and mutual access to cutting-edge R&D infrastructure. It reflects a shared vision to enhance India’s capabilities in sustainable electronics, circular economy practices, and innovation-driven manufacturing. The collaboration is structured to enable the exchange of faculty, researchers, and students between IIT Roorkee and C-MET. This alliance between academia and a government research institution underscores the growing significance of collaborative efforts in addressing national challenges through science, technology, and sustainable innovation.

Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, remarked, "This partnership with C-MET opens a pathway to impactful research that addresses critical challenges in electronic waste management and sustainable materials. It underscores our commitment to interdisciplinary research and industry-relevant innovation."

Dr. R. Ratheesh, Director, C-MET, shared,"We are delighted to collaborate with IIT Roorkee, one of India's premier engineering institutions. This MoU will allow us to jointly push the frontiers of technology development in advanced materials and recycling, while training the next generation of researchers and engineers."
