The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will soon forbid the process of disclosing candidates ranks to companies participating in the placement. As per media reports, the proposal to bar the process of sharing the ranking of the candidates was discussed by the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC) recently. This measure will be enforced from next year onwards, starting from the 2026-27 placement season, that will commence from the month of August after the new academic session.

This decision was taken keeping in mind a concern that had been long-standing among recruiters. Many of the recruiters make use of the rankings of students in the JEE Advanced test without realising that such practice ends up revealing those candidates who have joined the IITs through the admission quota system of the country. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and Economically Weaker Sections (SC/ST/OBC/EWS), get their own ranking list called Category-wise ranking list, as opposed to the Common Rank List (CRL).

According to news reports, many have differing views on whether the issue of discrimination of any sort based on the JEE ranking persists in the recruitment drives or not. While there have been no reports filed in this regard by any IIT, there are still students who agree that some recruiters are known to focus on the JEE ranking while recruiting students. A student at one of the newsly formed IIT revealed that, some international firms along with bigger companies demand students with JEE ranks below 1000 in CRL.
