Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday declared that India is poised to lead the world in deep-tech and innovation as he unveiled major initiatives to strengthen the country’s research, education, and startup ecosystems. Addressing the YUGM Conclave at Bharat Mandapam, Modi inaugurated cutting-edge AI super hubs and launched the Wadhwani Innovation Network, reinforcing the government's focus on technology-driven development.
“I am confident that India will lead the world in deep-tech,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the government's investment in research and innovation has more than doubled in the past decade—from ₹60,000 crore in 2013-14 to ₹1.25 lakh crore today.
Among the initiatives unveiled were AI and Intelligent Systems-focused research hubs at IIT Kanpur and IIT Bombay, and new platforms supporting biosciences, biotechnology, and health innovation. Modi also launched the Wadhwani Innovation Network in collaboration with the Wadhwani Foundation and National Research Foundation to foster high-impact research and entrepreneurship.
Highlighting gains made under the National Education Policy, the Prime Minister said that interdisciplinary learning, updated textbooks, and a robust digital infrastructure are transforming India’s education system. He credited initiatives like PM eVidya, DIKSHA, and the National Credit Framework for enabling inclusive, scalable, and multilingual learning across the country.
Modi pointed to the doubling of India’s patent filings—from 40,000 in 2014 to over 80,000 today—as proof of growing innovation capacity. “India’s youth now aspire to be job creators, not just job seekers,” he said, underscoring the role of technology and science as instruments of national service and empowerment.
He also praised the contributions of Indian-American entrepreneur Romesh Wadhwani, who was present at the event, calling him “a true friend of India” and commending his role in supporting the country’s innovation infrastructure.
The YUGM Conclave brought together young researchers, innovators, and leaders from across the country and underscored the government's ambition to make India a global deep-tech hub powered by indigenous talent and knowledge systems.
