IndiGo Co-Founder Rakesh Gangwal donates Rs 100 Cr to IIT Kanpur
Gangwal’s contribution will be used in establishing the School of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT Kanpur.
Rakesh Gangwal, Co-Founder of IndiGo airlines, has donated Rs 100 crore to support the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.
The medical school is envisioned in line with IIT Kanpur's endeavour to bring about a paradigm shift by merging medical research and technological innovations in the country.
Gangwal is an IIT Kanpur alumni who has made the largest personal donations with a Rs 100 crore contribution.
Sharing the announcement, IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar said in a tweet: “Here is big news from IIT Kanpur. In an extraordinary gesture, our alumnus Mr Rakesh Gangwal, Co-Founder of IndiGo airlines has made one of the largest personal donations with a 100 crore contribution focused on supporting the School of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT Kanpur.”
Prof Karandikar also thanked Rakesh Gangwal, Shobha Gangwal and his daughter Parul Gangwal for taking out time and being present in person for the agreement signing in Mumbai.
Rakesh Gangwal did his schooling at Don Bosco, Kolkata and completed Mechanical Engineering from the IIT Kanpur in 1975. He went on to do his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Gangwal was the chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Worldspan Technologies from 2003 to 2007. Gangwal co-founded IndiGo Airlines with Rahul Bhatia in 2006 with one aircraft, which became one of the largest Airlines in the country.
