JEE Advanced 2025 attempt limit has been rolled back to two attempts in two consecutive years from the revised three attempts in three consecutive years. The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to restore the earlier eligibility criterion used in previous years pertaining to number of attempts in JEE (Advanced).

IIT Kanpur has updated the website, jeeadv.ac.in with a new press release that mentions the restoration of JEE Advanced attempt limit to twice in two consecutive years. Read the details below.

JEE Advanced 2025 attempt limit has been rolled back to two attempts in two consecutive years from the revised three attempts in three consecutive years. The official JEE Advanced 2025 website has been updated with the press release dated November 18, 2024, informing about the JEE Advanced 2025 attempt limit being rolled back to twice in two consecutive years. On November 5, 2024, IIT Kanpur launched the JEE Advanced 2025 website with an official notice regarding the change in the JEE Advanced attempt limit. The attempt limit was increased to 3 times in 3 consecutive years.

The official press note of the JEE Advanced 2025 website regarding the restoration of the JEE Advanced attempt limit reads - 

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to restore the earlier eligibility criterion used in previous years pertaining to number of attempts in JEE (Advanced), in supersession of the criterion mentioned in Press Release dated November 05, 2024. This has been done after considering various competing requirements in the meeting of JAB held on November 15, 2024. This has resulted in restoring the earlier eligibility criteria followed since 2013. All other eligibility criteria remain same. What is JEE Advanced Attempt Limit?

JEE Advanced attempt limit is twice in two consecutive years and not thrice in three consecutive years as mentioned in the latest press release by the Joint Admission Board (JAB). Candidates who have appeared for JEE Advanced in 2024 can appear for JEE Advanced 2025. Candidates who have appeared for JEE Advanced 2023 and earlier cannot attempt JEE Advanced 2025.

Q:   I passed 12th in 2023 with 60% but I repeated 12th in 2024. Am I eligible for JEE advance 2025?
A: 

No. Candidates who appeared in Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2023, are NOT eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2025. Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2025. Since you have appeared for class 12 boards for the first time in 2023 you are NOT eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.

Q:   Who is eligible for JEE Advanced 2025?
A: 

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, candidates must be:

  • Among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in B.E./B.Tech. paper of JEE (Main) 2025.
  • Born on or after October 1, 2000. Five years age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, i.e. these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1995.
  • A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) maximum of three times in two consecutive years.
  • A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2023, 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT irrespective of whether or not the candidate continued in the programme or accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” / at a “reporting centre” in the past.
Q:   What minimum marks are required in JEE Mains to be eligible for JEE Advanced?

The minimum marks required in JEE Mains to qualify for JEE Advanced 2026 will be announced with the JEE Main 2026 final result after session 2 exams. Last year's minimum marks in JEE Mains to qualify for JEE Advanced were:

Candidates aiming for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) need to meet these cutoff marks in JEE Mains to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

Apart from the attempt limit which has now been restored to twice in two consecutive years, other criteria stays the same:

  • Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in B.E./B.Tech. paper (Paper I) of JEE (Main) 2025. 
  • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2000. Five years age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, i.e. these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1995.
  • A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT under any academic program that is listed in JoSAA Business Rules of 2024, irrespective of whether or not the candidate continued in the program OR accepted an IIT seat by reporting “online” / at a “reporting centre” in the past. Candidates whose admission to IITs was cancelled (for whatever reason) after joining any IIT are also NOT eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced) 2025.
