NIRF Rankings 2026: New College Rankings Expected Soon, Here’s What Students Should Know
The MoE is likely to announce the NIRF rankings 2026 release date anytime soon. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) uses five core parameters to evaluate and rank higher education institutions in India. The NIRF 2026 data submission process was completed earlier this year, with the main submission closing on March 16.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) is expected to release the NIRF 2026 rankings soon. The ministry has not announced the official date for the release of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India rankings 2026. Once released, candidates will be able to check the category-wise ranking lists on the official website, nirfindia.org.
The NIRF rankings are released every year by the Ministry of Education to rank higher education institutions across different categories. The rankings are an important metrics used by students while comparing colleges and universities for admissions.
NIRF Rankings 2026 Release Date
The NIRF Ranking 2026 release date is yet to be announced. The rankings are expected to be announced in September. The data submission process for ranking began on January 6 and closed on March 16, 2026. The separate data submission window for the Sustainable Institution category closed on March 23.
Categories for NIRF Ranking 2026
The NIRF rankings cover multiple areas of higher education, including Overall, Universities, Colleges, Engineering, Management, Medical, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture and Planning, Dental, Agriculture and Allied Sectors and Research Institutions, among others. The framework also includes specialised categories such as Innovation, Open Universities, Skill Universities and Sustainable Institutions.
What to expect from NIRF Rankings 2026
The NIRF 2026 rankings compare institutions based on parameters such as teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
NIRF 2025: Top institutions
Until the 2026 rankings are released, students can refer to the previous year's rankings. In the Overall category, IIT Madras topped the list, followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Bombay. IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur completed the top five. In the Engineering category, IIT Madras retained the top position, followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
