On National Space Day 2025, PM Narendra Modi announced ambitious targets for India’s space program—50 rocket launches a year, 5 space unicorns, an Astronaut Pool, and new opportunities for students through Olympiads, hackathons, and research collaborations.

PM Modi in his address has linked Space Ambitions with Education: Hackathons, Research and Astronaut Training for Youth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked National Space Day with a call to transform India’s space aspirations into opportunities for students, researchers and startups. Speaking at an event, PM Modi set ambitious target of 50 rocket launches per year and creation of five space-tech unicorns in next five years.

Competitions to Drive STEM Education

Highlighting India’s recent hosting of International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, where nearly 300 students from 60 countries participated, PM Modi praised Indian students for winning medals. Events like Indian Space Hackathon and Robotics Challenge were also showcased as examples of how competitions can ignite scientific curiosity and problem-solving skills among youth.

Astronaut Pool for Young Indians

Prime Minister also announced creation of an “Astronaut Pool”, offering pathways for young Indians to train and contribute to the nation’s space journey. Experts believe this could be a landmark step in aligning higher education with national missions.

PM Modi noted that more than 350 startups have entered the Indian space ecosystem, with innovations such as the first private PSLV rocket and a private Earth Observation satellite constellation. Universities and research bodies are expected to expand incubation labs, geospatial research projects, and industry tie-ups to meet this growing demand.

Space Tech for Governance and Learning

The PM emphasized the role of satellites in crop insurance, fisheries safety, and disaster management, pointing out that such applications should be integrated into education and research.
