The Education Minister and Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant said in the assembly that eight more government primary schools have shut down in the state.
While replying in assembly, the Education Minister and Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant said that eight more government primary schools have shut down in the state since last year.
In the academic year 2021-22, there were 726 government primary schools that were functional and this year only 718 are functional, he confirmed, as reported by TOI.
The data tabled in the assembly also showed that there are 15 government high schools in the state functioning without a full-time headmaster and there are two posts of principals of government higher secondary schools which are vacant. Also, 14 government high school headmasters are holding additional charge of another school.
Goa facing issue of low enrolement in govt primary schools
The state has been grappling with the issue of low enrolment in government primary schools. Last year also fourteen government primary schools have been shut down and in hundreds of government-run primary schools in Goa, the number of students is dwindling.
Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan data shows that 245 more government elementary schools in Goa have an enrolment of fewer than 15 students and when the enrollment goes down to zero the government has no choice but to shut down the school.
Of the surviving government primary schools, there is the majority of Marathi medium schools at over 650 and the rest is Konkani and Urdu medium schools. There are also a few offering Kannada and Hindi as the medium of instruction.
