Delhi has three central universities, JNU, DU and Jamia, and as per data shared by the Union Ministry of Education in Rajya Sabha, three universities have 1351 posts of faculty lying vacant.
The admission season at various universities have either started or is likely to begin in August for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. With universities already facing challenges related to offering online education having a high number of faculty positions vacant only adds to their problem.
According to a member of Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA), the numbers which are given by the ministry are only of posts lying vacant in the university departments, while if we look at the total number of posts lying vacant in all constituent colleges of DU their numbers are five times high. “The position of VC is lying vacant, the former VC could not initiate the process of filling of vacant posts. This problem is only going to aggravate,” he added.
After Delhi, Uttar Pradesh has four central universities with 1353 teaching posts lying vacant. As stated above AU has 598 posts vacant which is the highest, followed by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) having 422 posts vacant out of sanctioned 2108 posts. Aligarh Muslim University has 291 posts vacant while the newly established Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University having 42 posts vacant.
