This is the second death by suicide at the Lovely Professional University in Phagwara in 10 days, the protesters allege. Agni S Dilip from Kerala was pursuing a degree in design from the university, and was dealing with "personal issues", the police said, referring to a suicide note.
A group of students of Lovely Professional University (LPU) held a massive protest after a first-year student committed suicide. The 21-year-old student, hailing from Kerala, allegedly hanged himself to death inside his hostel room on Tuesday evening.
This is the second death by suicide at the Lovely Professional University in Phagwara in 10 days, the protesters allege. Agni S Dilip from Kerala was pursuing a degree in design from the university, and was dealing with "personal issues", the police said, referring to a suicide note, as reported by NDTV.
"A first-year student of B. Design at LPU died by suicide on Tuesday afternoon. DSP Phagwara stated that prima facie the student was having some personal issues, as has been suggested by the note left by them," the police in Kapurthala tweeted.
The university issued a statement giving a similar reason. "LPU fraternity is saddened by the unfortunate incident. The initial investigation by the Police, and the contents of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the dead. The university is providing full support to the authorities for further investigation," said the statement.
The protesting students also alleged that the University had covered up the previous suicide and demanded the reason behind both cases. They claim the previous incident was "resolved behind closed doors".
"We have managed the situation after some time as students were sent to their rooms. We also informed the parents of the deceased and they were expected to reach today and we shall proceed further according to their statement," said Phagwara superintendent of police Mukhtiar Rai.
