Maharashtra Approves Phased Implementation of NEP 2020, To rollout from 2025–26 academic session

The new 5+3+3+4 curriculum emphasizes holistic, inquiry-based learning, with Hindi as a mandatory third language.
The Maharashtra government has officially approved the phased implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with the rollout commencing from the 2025–26 academic year. The initiative, announced via a government notification on April 16, 2025, will initially focus on Standard I, aligning with the NEP’s 5+3+3+4 curriculum structure, which emphasizes holistic, flexible, and student-centric learning.
The new curriculum, developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), has been approved by the State Steering Committee, chaired by School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse. It incorporates multilingual learning, bridge courses, and inquiry-driven, project-based pedagogies to foster critical thinking and creativity.
A significant feature is the mandatory inclusion of Hindi as the third language, alongside Marathi and English, to promote linguistic diversity and cultural integration. “This strategic implementation of the NEP signifies a pivotal shift toward a more inclusive and holistic educational framework in Maharashtra, poised to equip students with essential skills,” said a senior official from the Maharashtra Department of School Education.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who reviewed the School Education Department’s plans, expressed confidence in the state’s educational resurgence. “Maharashtra will once again come to the forefront of school education,” Fadnavis stated, highlighting the alignment with national standards and the adoption of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum framework for Classes 3 to 12. He emphasized that the policy would enhance students’ performance in national-level examinations and create greater academic and professional opportunities. The CM’s vision underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing education while preserving Maharashtra’s cultural ethos.
Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse elaborated on the practical steps, noting that CBSE textbooks, translated into Marathi, will be available by April 1, 2025, to ensure accessibility. “This move aims to enhance the quality of education,” Bhuse said, addressing the Legislative Council. The government is also prioritizing teacher training and developing new learning materials to ensure a seamless transition.
The phased rollout will expand to other grades in subsequent years, with an initial focus on foundational education for ages 3 to 8, covering kindergarten to Standard II. This student-centric approach, backed by robust infrastructure and policy support, is expected to redefine Maharashtra’s educational landscape, fostering a generation of skilled and culturally rooted learners.
