Courses must align with the National Higher Education Qualification Framework and be part of undergraduate or postgraduate programs.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is opening doors for students across India to access quality education from anywhere, inviting universities and colleges to offer credit-based courses on the SWAYAM platform. This call, aligned with the updated SWAYAM Guidelines 2024, aims to weave online learning into the heart of higher education, making it more accessible and flexible for learners everywhere.

As per a letter issued by UGC, it has set a deadline of June 15, 2024, for institutions to submit their Expressions of Interest (EoI). The initiative supports the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting online courses that students can take to earn credits, which their universities must recognize. Institutions like Institutes of National Importance, Central and State Universities, Deemed Universities, and other government-funded higher education bodies are eligible to participate.

The UGC is encouraging these institutions, referred to as Host Institutions, to focus on underrepresented areas like multidisciplinary and skill-based subjects. Courses must align with the National Higher Education Qualification Framework and be part of undergraduate or postgraduate programs. To ensure quality, the courses need to include videos, reading materials, self-assessments, and discussion forumsโ€”following a four-quadrant approachโ€”and will undergo a peer-review process to maintain academic standards.

Institutions interested in contributing to this mission of democratizing education can submit their EoI through the official portal, providing details such as course titles, duration, credit load, and faculty information. The UGC has made the full guidelines, titled โ€œSWAYAM Guidelines for Online Education for SWAYAM Platform 2024,โ€ available for reference, along with the EoI submission format.

This move reflects the UGCโ€™s commitment to creating a more inclusive and learner-centric education system, offering students the chance to learn, grow, and earn credits in a way that fits their lives.
