The Commission has directed all higher educational institutions (HEIs) to implement the programme from the July 2025 academic session after obtaining necessary statutory approvals.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the "UGC Guidelines on Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP), 2025", aimed at integrating apprenticeships into undergraduate education to enhance students’ employability and industry readiness. The Commission has directed all higher educational institutions (HEIs) to implement the programme from the July 2025 academic session after obtaining necessary statutory approvals.

Bridging Education and Industry Needs

The AEDP aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes holistic and practical learning by merging academic and vocational education. The programme is designed to equip students with industry-relevant skills, ensuring smoother transitions between education and employment. The UGC aims to reduce the education-employability gap by fostering stronger industry-academia collaborations.

Key Features of AEDP 2025:

Apprenticeship Integration: Undergraduate students in UGC-recognized HEIs will undertake apprenticeships as a mandatory part of their degree curriculum.

Credit Framework: Apprenticeships will be credited based on duration, with a three-month apprenticeship earning 10 credits.

Multiple Modes of Implementation: HEIs can offer AEDP through direct industry partnerships or via the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) portal.

Stipend Mechanism:

If implemented through direct industry tie-ups, stipends will be paid as per the Apprentices Act, 1961 & Apprenticeship Rules, 1992.

If implemented via NATS, stipends will be government-funded as per agreements with the Board of Apprenticeship Training (BOAT) or Board of Practical Training (BOPT).

A Step Towards Industry-Oriented Higher Education

Apprenticeships are globally recognized as effective skill-training methods, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. With AEDP, the UGC aims to reduce youth unemployment, foster a skilled workforce, and contribute to India’s economic growth by aligning education with industry demands.

Higher education institutions have been urged to initiate necessary approvals to roll out AEDP from the upcoming academic session in July 2025.
