Selected MOOCs will be launched during the July–December 2025 semester and made available to students nationwide through the SWAYAM portal.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently invited proposals from eligible faculty members across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for the SWAYAM platform.

The initiative is part of UGC’s ongoing efforts to enhance the availability of high-quality, credit-based online courses aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the official notification, only regular faculty from UGC-approved institutions who hold a PhD and have at least five years of teaching experience in their subject area are eligible to submit course proposals. Each applicant is required to provide a consent letter from their institution confirming support for course development and implementation. The proposed MOOCs must adhere to UGC’s credit framework regulations and include comprehensive content, learning objectives, assessments, and video lectures. Importantly, all submitted materials must be plagiarism-checked, and a report must accompany the proposal.

The UGC has set clear guidelines regarding the selection process. Proposals will be screened by SWAYAM’s host institutions—such as the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), IITs, and IGNOU—based on academic merit, subject relevance, and alignment with national learning goals. Selected MOOCs will be launched during the July–December 2025 semester and made available to students nationwide through the SWAYAM portal.

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), a government-backed initiative managed by the Ministry of Education and UGC, currently hosts over 12,000 courses with more than 12 million learners. The platform plays a key role in democratizing access to higher education by allowing students to enrol in credit-earning courses taught by top academics from premier institutions.

The UGC aims to expand the academic diversity on SWAYAM and encourage faculty to contribute to India’s growing online education infrastructure. While the deadline for proposal submission was June 30, 2025, the move has already generated interest across academic circles. The emphasis on digital integrity, institutional support, and subject expertise underscores the Commission’s focus on quality and accountability in the online learning space.
