This advisory arrives at a critical time when countless first-year students are preparing to join institutions across the country.

With colleges and universities set to reopen for the upcoming academic year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a stern warning: “Say No to Ragging!” All higher education institutions across India have been directed to adopt strict anti-ragging measures to curb the ongoing menace of ragging.

In its official X (formerly Twitter) statement, the UGC reminds universities and colleges of their legal and ethical obligation to ensure student safety, stressing that ragging cannot be tolerated in any form. The Commission has urged institutions to:

Enforce zero-tolerance policies against ragging,

Constitute fully functional Anti-Ragging Committees and Squads,

Conduct awareness and orientation programs for freshers,

Regularly monitor student hostels and campuses,

Impose strict disciplinary action against those found involved.

This advisory arrives at a critical time when countless first-year students are preparing to join institutions across the country. Last year, there were multiple reports of ragging-related incidents, prompting the UGC to revisit and reinforce its regulations ahead of the new term.

The UGC’s renewed emphasis aims to strengthen existing frameworks, ensuring institutions remain vigilant and proactive. University administrations are being asked to report on action plans and compliance ahead of final academic calendar announcements.

What students and parents can do:

Report any ragging immediately—through college committees, Anti-Ragging Helplines, or mobile apps.

If unequipped to manage ragging internally, institutions risk facing UGC sanctions, including withdrawal of recognition or funding.

With the academic session set to begin in July and August, the UGC’s timely reminder underscores the importance of a safe, supportive learning environment—one that promotes growth without intimidation.
