With about 2.3 lakh application forms received, CAT exam has recorded a fall in registrations as compared to last year.

CAT 2020 has recorded a fall in total number of registrations. This year about 2.30 lakh students have registered for CAT exam which is about 10,000 less than last year.

With about 2.30 lakh application forms received, CAT exam has recorded a fall in registrations as compared to last year. In 2019 about 2.44 lakh students registered for the exam, highest number recorded since 2010. The fall in number is most likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many other national level entrance exams such as JEE Main and Advanced also recorded drop in registrations. 

Despite the dip, experts are of the opinion is that the number is still encouraging, given the COVID-19 pandemic situation and crisis in job sector. CAT 2020 is scheduled to be conducted on November 29 in 156 cities across India.

Himanshu Rai, director, IIM Indore, the convening institute for CAT 2020 told a news daily, "The high registration numbers reflect the sustained interest students have in the field of management and IIMs. In these challenging times, the CAT team is working hard to ensure a safe exam with social distancing and isolation facilities".

In view of COVID-19 pandemic, a few changes have been made in CAT exam. The exam will be conducted in three slots instead of two and the duration will be 120 minutes instead of 180 minutes. The exam duration has been reduced to allow staggered entry at the exam centres and following of safety guidelines introduced by the government. Also read: Changes in CAT exam pattern

CAT exam is conducted for admission to India’s premier B-schools, the IIMs and other top MBA institutes. Over 1200 MBA institutes accept CAT score for admission to its various MBA/PGDM and Executive MBA programmes.
