Gujarat is adding over 7,000 doctors every year as medical education capacity expands, CM Bhupendra Patel said, highlighting growth in MBBS and PG seats.

Gujarat is now adding more than 7,000 doctors every year, indicating a steady expansion of state’s medical education capacity, said Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

Chief Minister was speaking at a national-level medical conference in Ahmedabad, where he highlighted role of new medical colleges and increased seat capacity in strengthening healthcare delivery across state.

According to Patel, Gujarat had only 1,175 medical seats during early phase of its medical education expansion. Since then, state has focused on setting up medical colleges in multiple districts and increasing undergraduate and postgraduate intake resulting in a sharp rise in number of graduating doctors each year.

Q:   How much time is provided to join allotted college after seat allocation?
A:

For every counselling round, reporting deadline is provided in the counselling schedule. Candidates can submit fees and report till the given deadline. Though candidates can report till last day, but they are advised to report before the deadline due to different schedule of holiday/working hours in various Medical Colleges/Institutes. Also they are advised to carry all original certificates and documents during reporting.

Q:   Can I get MBBS admission with a 300 score in NEET?
A:

It is possible to get admission to a private medical college with a score of 300 in NEET. For a government medical college, one should ideally obtain a score above 600. The NEET cutoff for the Government medical colleges varies as per the institute rank and round of counselling. Hence, it can be said that a score of 300 in NEET may not be sufficient for admission to Government medical colleges. As per past years' trends, a score between 500 to 700 or above is in the cutoff marks for NEET.

He said that expansion will address doctor shortages and improve access to healthcare services, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions. At same time rapid increase in seats has renewed discussions around faculty availability, clinical exposure and infrastructure readiness, which remain major challenges for medical regulators and institutions.

Patel said Gujarat’s long-term development roadmap places healthcare and medical education among its core priorities, aligning with broader national goals of strengthening public health systems.

Rising number of medical graduates is also expected to have implications for NEET UG and NEET PG competition, internship availability and postgraduate seat demand in coming years making capacity planning a critical issue for medical education authorities.
