NEET UG 2027 Exam to Have Age Bar? Check Latest Update on Eligibility, Number of Attempts & CBT Mode
The Centre may introduce an age limit and attempt cap for NEET UG candidates in future. NEET UG is also expected to shift to CBT mode from next year.
NEET Updates: The Centre is considering major changes in NEET UG exam, including upper age limit and cap on number of attempts for candidates. At present, NEET UG has no upper age restriction, and students can appear for exam any number of times after completing minimum age requirement of 17 years.
This proposed reforms were discussed during a meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports. Officials said these changes are part of long-term reforms suggested by Radhakrishnan Committee after recent NEET controversy.

NEET UG May Introduce Age Limit and Attempt Restriction
According to officials, government is planning to introduce maximum age limit and limit number of attempts for NEET UG aspirants in future. However, final decision will be taken after discussions withย Health Ministry.
Currently, NEET UG eligibility rules allow candidates to appear multiple times without any upper age restriction. The only requirement is that candidates must be at least 17 years old at time of admission. Officials said proposed changes aim to reduce repeated long-term attempts and improve overall examination system.
NEET UG to Shift to CBT Mode
Government has also confirmed plans to gradually shift NEET UG to computer-based testing mode from next year. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had earlier announced that NEET UG will move to digital mode in phases.ย At present, NEET UG is conducted in pen and paper mode because of large number of candidates appearing for exam. This year, around 22.7 lakh students registered for NEET UG. National Testing Agency (NTA) informed committee that it currently has CBT capacity for around 1.5 lakh candidates per shift and plans to increase it to nearly 10 lakh within a year.
Multi-Stage NEET Exam Also Under Discussion
The Centre is also considering conducting NEET UG in multiple stages and sessions in future. The Radhakrishnan Committee had recommended exploring a multi-stage testing system with fixed eligibility thresholds and scoring patterns. Officials said these reforms are still under discussion and will be introduced gradually after consultations with different ministries and experts.
