Interns booked, suspended for six months after physically assaulting junior at Nizamabad Medical College

In a shocking case of ragging at the Government Medical College, Nizamabad, a fourth-year MBBS student was allegedly beaten up by five senior interns over an attendance dispute. The victim, identified as Rahul Reddy, claimed that he was forced to salute the interns, sit on the floor, and later assaulted for nearly 30 minutes inside the gynaecology department.

As per the student’s complaint, the interns also snatched his mobile phone during the incident. Following his report, police registered a case under the Prohibition of Ragging Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha (BNS). The student received outpatient treatment and later submitted evidence, including video recordings, which circulated widely on social media.

The anti-ragging committee of the college conducted an inquiry and recommended strict disciplinary action. Based on its findings, the administration suspended the five interns for six months and expelled them from the hostel.

The college has also constituted a three-member committee to conduct a deeper probe into the incident. However, the college vice-principal argued that the case was a “personal dispute” and not ragging, stressing that interns had no authority to mark or modify attendance.

District Collector T. Vinay Krishna Reddy has sought a detailed report from the college, while Nizamabad Police Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya issued a stern warning that ragging or violence in educational institutions would not be tolerated. He further said that offenders could face criminal prosecution and even expulsion from their courses if found guilty.

The ragging incident has triggered outrage among students and parents, raising questions about the safety of medical students in Telangana’s colleges. Many have demanded stronger monitoring mechanisms and strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
