TNTET 2025: Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers Demand Reduction in TET Qualifying Marks
TNTET 2025 qualifying marks is 55 percent as of now. However, Tamil Nadu graduate teachers are demanding reducing TNTET cutoff to 50 percent. Check details here
Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachersโ Association has appealed to State School Education Department to reduce minimum qualifying marks for Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET) Papers 1 and 2, held on November 15 and 16, 2025. They are seeking reduction in TET qualifying marks from 55% to 50%. Currently, for TNTET 150 mark exam, general category candidates must score 90 marks, while those from backward and scheduled communities must secure at least 82.
Demand to Revise TNTET 2025 Cut-Off
Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachersโ Association has requested government to lower qualifying mark for TNTET 2025 (Papers 1 and 2) from 55% to 50% and issue an official order. Since Tamil Nadu conducts a separate recruitment exam for teacher appointments, candidates must clear both eligibility and appointment tests. The association stressed that reducing TET pass mark will not compromise educational standards. The statement concluded with renewed appeal to bring down qualifying percentage to 50%.
Why Government Should Reconsider Reducing TET Qualifying Marks?
TET only certifies eligibility. Actual appointments are made through a separate recruitment process that involves competitive exams, quotas and merit lists. Lowering qualifying marks, the association argued, will not change recruitment standards.
Several states have already fixed TET qualifying percentage at 50% or below. In Andhra Pradesh, following Supreme Courtโs direction on mandatory TET for all teachers, qualifying marks were subsequently reduced.

Supreme Court Mandate Need for TET
Following Supreme Court order requiring even teachers appointed before RTE Act to pass TET, qualification has become essential for all in-service teachers. This yearโs exams saw a massive turnout, with more than 3.75 lakh candidates appearing statewide. Under RTE Act 2009, passing TET is mandatory for secondary and graduate teacher appointments across India. Tamil Nadu has followed this rule since 2012.
