UPSC CSE 2026: 2,834 Civil Services Posts Vacant Across IAS, IPS, and IFS, says Govt

UPSC CSE: According to official data tabled in Rajya Sabha, a total of 2,834 vacancies have remained vacant in India's civil services. The government data shows that as of January 1, 2025, there were 1300 vacancies in Indian Administrative Service, 505 in Indian Police Service and 1029 in Indian Forest Service.
The Rajya Sabha was apprised this information in response to a question raised in parliament. Out of 15,169 sanctioned posts in IAS, IPS, and IFS, only 12,335 have been filled and other remained vacant.
The government data confirmed that out of total sanctioned 6,877 IAS posts, 5,577 officers are currently in service. For 5099 IPS sanctioned posts, 4594 officers are recruited and they are serving, for IFS, 2164 officers got service against the 3193 sanctioned posts.
UP Got Highest Sanction Posts For Civil Services
According to the data, Uttar Pradesh got the highest sanctioned UPSC CSE posts which stood at 652, followed by AGMUT Cadre which has 542 posts. Madhya Pradesh got 459, Maharashtra got 435 posts while Tamil Nadu got 394 posts.
UP also topped in IPS posts with 541, followed by WB-347, Maharashtra-329, and Madhya Pradesh-319. For IFS, AGMUT got the maximum posts which stood at 302, next was Madhya Pradesh with 296 posts, Uttar Pradesh with 217, Maharashtra - 206 and Karnataka at 164.
The Rajya Sabha data also confirmed that in last five years, a total of 245 OBC candidates, 135 SC candidates, and 67 ST candidates were selected in IAS.
255 OBC candidates, 141SC candidates, and 71 ST candidates were recruited for IPS in last five years, and 231 OBC, 95 SC candidates, and 48 ST candidates were hired for IFS.

Wherever two or more candidates have secured equal aggregate marks in ESE the tie(s) have been resolved in accordance with the principles approved by the Commission, viz.
(i) The candidates with more marks in subject/technical papers plus marks of Personality Test may be ranked higher;
(ii) In case the total marks in the subject/technical papers plus marks of Personality Test are equal, thecandidate who is senior in age may be ranked higher.
