The UGC has released a draft Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) under the NEP 2020 to integrate ancient Indian mathematical traditions like Sutra-based algebra, Kala Gaṇana, and Hindu calendar systems into undergraduate (UG) programs.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with a draft mathematics curriculum for undergraduate courses that integrates ancient Indian mathematical knowledge. The proposal is part of the Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF), aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

As per reports, under the proposed framework, students may study traditional systems such as Kala Gaṇana (timekeeping using Sun, Moon, stars, and cosmic cycles) and Bharatiya Bijagaṇita (Indian algebra), alongside a survey of historical mathematical principles found in Surya Siddhanta, Aryabhatiyam, Shulba Śūtras, among others. The curriculum encompasses concepts like geometry, trigonometry, early calculus, polynomial division using the Paravartya Yojayet sutra (“transpose and apply”), the structure of cosmic time (Yugas, Kalpas, Brahma’s day), Hindu calendrical science, and the calculation of auspicious timings (muhurtas).

The higher education regulator has framed the proposal to be flexible—allowing these courses to be introduced as Discipline-Specific Core (DSC), Discipline-Specific Electives (DSEs), or Generic Electives (GEs) depending on university discretion. Stakeholders are invited to provide feedback before finalization.

Proponents of the new framework argue the draft reconnects students with India's rich mathematical legacy, incorporating experiential learning through seminars, projects, and internships, and nurturing cultural-rooted analytical thinking.

The draft also forms part of a broader Indian Knowledge Tradition (IKS) initiative aimed at integrating indigenous wisdom across higher education institutions. UGC guidelines recommend that around five percent of undergraduate and postgraduate credits be devoted to IKS.
