US, India strengthen education ties; announce 8 projects
In an effort to further strengthen education collaborations between India and the United States, eight institutional partnership projects have been announced. Along with it, four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed and 126 Raman fellows for post-doctoral research announced. These form a part of the second round of Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative awards.
This initiative will prioritise the field of higher education, informed officials. Each of the eight projects will receive approximately $250,000, which is to be utilised over a period of three years.
Under the Singh-Obama Knowledge Initiative, both sides will be focusing on two-way student mobility, research collaborations, faculty development, establishment of community colleges, collaborations for cyber system and technology enabled learning like the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Barack Obama had announced the Obama-Singh Initiative in November 2009 as an affirmation of their commitment to building an enhanced India-US partnership in education.
