I think there is a misconception about to appear for JEE Main January and JEE Main April. Both are two different attempts. It totally depends on the candidate and his convenience. If he/she wants to appear for either of the session or both. While we talk about getting failed in a session, so pass and fail result will be declared after April session considering the best performance out of the two sessions. That is the main reason why it is conducted in 2 sessions
Now one more thing, Change of JEE Main pattern is about change in number of questions, change in total marks, introduction of integer type questions in the examination and
