So the answer to your question would be Yes, practising a lot is the greatest way to develop competitive programming skills, but you also need to solve increasingly difficult issues, not just the simple ones. Step outside your comfort zone and put yourself to the test. Sort by how many people were able to solve it. Solve a few issues.
