The Cockrell School of Engineering receives a generous amount of donations from alumni, corporations and friends of the Cockrell School. The school awards scholarships recognizing the academic achievements and leadership potential of future students whose sum is more than USD 10 million to undergraduates in merit-based awards. 

Currently enrolled engineering students may complete the Engineering scholarship application by May 1 each year to be considered for scholarship awards and renewals the following year.

The Cockrell School in 2024-2025 US News and World Report rankings came in as the 10th best undergraduate engineering program in the nation.  

  • The school is ranked #6 among public universities and #1 in Texas. 

  • 2 Engineering programs are ranked at top 5 in USA 

  • 8 Engineering programs are ranked at top 10 in USA  

  • 9 Engineering programs are ranked at top 15 in USA 

Petroleum Engineering is considered the best course for Engineering for both undergraduate and graduate at Cockrell School of Engineering. Petroleum Engineering is ranked #1 for graduate and #2 for undergraduate.

The Cockrell School offers various courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. 

  •  For international students the fee structure is a little expensive compared to residents of the USA.  

  • The application fee for undergraduate and postgraduate international students is USD 90 (INR 7.71K).  

  • The school does not offer scholarship to incoming undergraduate students, but it does offer limited number of scholarships after the international students gets admitted into the school after completion of the Engineering scholarship application by Mar 1 each year.

Admission to the Cockrell School is competitive and based on criteria similar to the school's requirements. But it should be higher than those students who are also competing for the same admission to the university. 

It gets a bit harder for students to get into the Cockrell School of Engineering as the acceptance rate is relatively higher. The overall undergraduate acceptance rate of the University of Texas at Austin is 29% in 2023-24. The acceptance rate for postgraduates is 25.94%. 

International students who wish to study in the USA at the University of Texas at Austin must have a US students visa.

The Board of Regents of University of Texas on July 11, 2007, renamed the College of Engineering at the University of Texas, Austin, to the Cockrell School of Engineering. The name was renamed to honor the late Ernest Cockrell Jr. of Houston who was a 1936 graduate of the university who did his bachelor and master degrees in petroleum engineering.

Ernest Cockrell Jr. died in 1972 and in 1974 Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall, a primary engineering building on the campus, was named in his memory.
