There are a very few job vacancies in mechatronics for freshers in very few organisations. Since you will not study some core subjects of mechanical engineering, you won't be able to clear GATE or any other exam. It might be a problem a problem if your goal is to do job.
For knowledge and projects- mechatronics:
It's obviously better in many ways. Thing is that you will neither be as good as a mechanical engineer nor as good as an electronics engineer so all you would be able to do is make projects and learn about both fields simultaneously. You can study further studies in Agricultural Engineering, there are many universities, many programs and many specializations. If you want to do research you may opt for MSc/PhD. Scope is good in countries like Canada, Netherlands, Japan etc. Everywhere the admission requirements are different. And if you want to study abroad prepare for study abroad entrance exams.
