Yes, COAP registration is mandatory for IIT Madras admissions done on the basis of GATE exam. The institute accepts GATE + COAP for both M.Tech and MA admissions. Any student choosing to register via GATE score at the institute must register on COAP portal as well.

SIT Pune prepares merit lists based on GATE scores. Merit list is prepared on the basis of entrance exam results and personal interview performance for those who have not taken GATE exam but want M.Tech admission.
