The West Virginia University is known for being part of the institutions that were created as part of the Morrill Act passed by then US President Abraham Lincoln, which involved granting land to state governments willing to establish a college that provides mechanical arts & agricultural education to local students.

Michigan State University was established in 1855. It is the nation's pioneer land-grant university. It was initially called as Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. In 1861, its name changed to State Agricultural College. Then, in 1909, the name of the college changed to Michigan Agricultural College. In 1925, Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science and then, in 1955, it became Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science. Finally, in 1964, the university became Michigan State University.
