This is so because there are just about 40000 seeds in total across all the NITs and GFTIs and equivalent institutes. Out of these seats, the quota for OBC NCL at 27% will indicate that there are about 1600 seats for this category. In addition to this almost every student gives this branch as the first choice, and you have about 35000 students from OBC NCL ahead of you and finding for a very small number of seats. But then admission process sometimes throws up many surprising results and hence if you qualified the cut off percentile that will be declared by National testing agency then you must take part in the admission process.
