The term "Graphic Design" is getting fast replaced by "Visual Design", "Digital Design", etc. This is due to the tremendous growth of Digital content across the world. Internet coupled with smartphone revolution has opened up new business opportunities like E-Commerce and mobile commerce. Today the top IT majors have started recruiting visual designers. So, change your thought process to develop design skills which will be useful for medium like Internet, Mobile, etc. along with the traditional print medium. This will give you immediate opportunities as a designer. Even though design industry never poses restrictions on graduation, a mechanical engineer has a better chance to develop as a digital designer, product designer etc. Today companies like E-bay, Flipkart, amazon, CTS etc. have started taking lot of talented designers.

Do you have any knowledge or experience in fashion because they would want these? Usually they prefer students with a fashion degree background. The ideal program for you would be the MA in fashion communication program.
If you are still interested in the design program, the most important job for you here is to demonstrate your interest through your creative skills. Applicants are also required to submit a very strong portfolio, you need to work on this segment very carefully. You may apply into the Graduate Diploma in Fashion and then consider doing the MA. A lateral transfer may be possible. I will advise you to get work experience of at least a year probably in a fashion house before you apply, so that you can relate to the application requirements easily.
