With 87% in Class 12, getting ECE at Thapar University is unlikely through board-marks alone.
ECE admissions are mainly based on JEE Main rank, while Class 12 marks are only for eligibility.
In board-merit rounds, ECE cutoffs usually go 93–95%+ PCM.
So, 87% isn't enough by itself — a strong JEE Main score is the realistic way to secure ECE.

No, if you want admission in the first round. At IIIT Bhagalpur, the first round closing cutoff for the BTech ECE course was 44609 for the General AI category. For other categories, it's even more competitive.
However, you can wait for the next rounds of counselling to be released, since the cutoffs do get lenient as the counselling process progresses. To know the round 1 and last round closing rank of previous years to get an idea of the cutoff trend, see below.
| Category | ECE Cutoff 2025 Closing Rank (Round 1) | ECE Cutoff 2025 Closing Rank (Last Round) |
|---|---|---|
| General | 40291 | 80191 |
| OBC | 15417 | 93624 |
| SC | 9121 | 257248 |
| ST | 4591 | 5006 |
| EWS | 6238 | 6824 |
| PWD | 2560 | 2634 |

It is almost impossible that you can get CSE or ECE branches any college but there are little chances to get environmental engineering, Biotechnology type branches in lower IIIT'S.
Personal suggest for you is to take drop.
