Some books, like the Official Cambridge Guide, are for both Academic and General Training. But many books are only for one version. So always check if the book is for Academic IELTS or General IELTS before buying.

The minimum IELTS score for student visa depends on the country you are going to. Some countries ask for 5.5, others want 6.0 or 6.5. There is no one fixed score. You must check the visa IELTS requirement for the country you are applying to.

Some universities give conditional admission if your IELTS score is less than required. They may ask you to do an English course first before starting your main program. This helps you improve English and be ready for studies at the university.

Then you will have to go to the nearest city that has a centre. You can check this on the IELTS centre locator tool on their website.

You go through ID check, they give you instructions, and you sit in your place. You can't take your phone or bag inside. Listening, Reading and Writing happens together, one after the other.

Try to reach at least 30 to 45 minutes early. They will check your ID and do some formalities. If you are late, they may not allow you inside.
