There are two major categories of AME courses for you to opt for, one is the A program that is usually of 2-year duration with one year of academic training and classroom lectures, and the second year of hands-on experience in live environments.
Talking about the B programme in AME, which is all about the mechanical and avionics systems of the aircraft, you need to invest at least 2 years in academic training and the other one or two years in practical exposure and research opportunities.
