Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies is a good institute as it insures hundred percent placement to it cadets and works hard to achieve it at the end of placement sessions. The eyesight of candidates must not have any degree of squin or any morbid condition of eyes or of the eyelids that is liable to aggravate or recur. Neither should they exhibit symptoms of the pressure of trachoma and iris complications. Candidates must possess good binocular vision (fusion faculty and a full field of vision in both eyes). Movement of the eyeballs must be full in all direction and the pupils should react normally to light and accommodation. Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in the other eye for distant unaided vision.

You have to pursue a 4-year BE/B.Tech Marine engineering course on the completion of which you qualify to become a fifth engineering onboard a merchant ship. You can also become a fifth engineer after completing a one-year graduate mechanical engineering course prior to which you should have completed BE/B.Tech in mechanical engineering. To become a fourth engineeer, you have to qualify part IV exam conducted by DG Shipping, Govt. of India. This qualification will take you through to the second engineer rank. To become a chief engineer, you have to pass a separate exam conducted by DG Shipping. You will also require a sailing experience of six months to become a fourth engineering and more years of sailing experience to rise up the rank.
