Marine Engineering

All candidates who qualify for B.Tech (Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering) degree courses have to submit a Physical Fitness Certificate from Registered Medical Practitioner. The candidate must be physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines. Candidates with Disability (DA) are not eligible for admission to all marine and related courses. Failure to meet the medical standards would disqualify a candidate for admission. In case of an appeal, the same will be referred to a medical board appointed by the Indian Maritime University. The decision of such medical board shall be final.
Eye Sight:
There should not be any degree of squint or any morbid condition of eyes or of the eyelids that is liable to aggravate or recur, pressure of trachoma and iris complication sequel. Candidates must possess good binocular vision (Fusion faculty and a full field of vision in both eyes). Movement of the eyeballs must be full in all directions and the pupils should react normally to light and accommodation.
In case of candidates joining B.Tech. (Marine Engineering) degree course, distance vision (unaided 0.5 (6/12) in each eye or 0.67 (6/9) in better eye and 0.33 (6/18) in another eye. Normal color vision shall be tested by Ishihara test chart.

After the completion of the course and 6 months of sea service, one will be able to get the Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency. After getting this certificate, one may join Merchant Navy ships as a Marine Engineer. With time, after going through more training programs and going through further sea service period, one may rise through the ranks and obtain Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This way, one may even go on and become the Chief Engineering Officer.

The definition of better varies from person to person and is influenced by personal inclinations and ones strength for e.g. some people might to go with regular stream like CS, mechanical, Electronics and some might go with not so common branches like Robotics, petroleum, mining.
Opt for the engineering branch that you love the most and are most passionate about and analyze the future work conditions, scope and growth prospects before taking admission.
You can also opt for psychometric test comprising of Aptitude, personality and career interest to clear confusion.
In my opinion, petroleum engineering can get a major setback as the entire world is moving towards clean energy. Hence, choose the stream very wisely.
