Yes, Michigan State University is one of the oldest public universities in the United States. Michigan State University was established in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. IT became the United States’ premier land-grant university and the prototype for the entire land-grant system created when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862. Michigan State University is one of the best public universities in US. MSU consistently ranks among the top 40 public universities in all the major ranking magazines.

When it comes to MSU's rankings, it is one of the top 150 universities worldwide with the rank #136 in the top-ranking publisher's ranking in 2024 and #152 in 2025. As per another-ranking publisher, Michigan State University has claimed the spot #63 in Best National Universities in United States in 2025. Times Higher Education has placed MSU at #116 in World University Rankings in the 2024 edition.

Michigan Technological University as well as Michigan State University are two well-known institutions in US and good abroad options for students. When it comes to rankings, Michigan State University beats Michigan Technological Universities with the rank #136 in QS World University of Rankings. Whereas, the latter has claimed a rank in the range #851-900 in the same category.
