It depends a little on which course (BSc, MSc, etc.) and which session, but for University of Madras — here's what I found about how entrance / admissions work for “Medical Microbiology” (or MSc Medical Microbiology) at that university -

For the MSc Medical Microbiology (self‑supportive) course, many sources say that no separate entrance exam is required — admissions are “merit‑based, ” meaning they rely on your undergraduate degree marks. 

According to one info‑page: “candidates who wish to take admission to MSc courses are not required to take any entrance test. They just need to fill the application form.” 

There is no specific entrance exam; admission is based on marks in the qualifying undergraduate degree.”

For admission to postgraduate studies at Central and participating universities, a new entrance exam at the all-Indian level called the Central University Entrance Test (Postgraduate), or NTA CUET PG, is being launched.
