For admission to MSc programme at NIT Nagaland candidate must complete the institution's entrance standards, which include achieving a valid score in the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Admission Test for MSc followed by CCMN Counselling.  Also candidates have to fulfill the eligibility criteria i.e. Bachelor's degree with 60% aggregate.  NIT Meghalaya conducts its own admission process for the left over seats from the CCMN counselling process.

The selection procedure for BTech at NIT Nagaland revolves around the entrance exam and counselling process. To qualify for the BTech programme candidates must appear for the JEE Main exams followed by the JoSAA counselling. Canddiates must apply by visiting the official website of the JEE Main and JoSAA. As per the exam pattern of JEE Mains, the exam is conducted online as a Computer Based Test. JEE Main will have three papers, Paper 1 for admission to BE/BTech course, Paper 2A for BArch admission and Paper 2B for BPlan course admission. The duration of the JEE Main exam is three hours and has Multiple Choice (MCQ) and Integer Value (Numerical Value Answer) type questions. JEE Main Paper 1 will have a total of 90 questions while Paper 2A and 2B have 82 and 105 questions respectively.
