There are fifteen departments at NIT Surathkal. The departments in question comprise the following: Water Resources & Ocean Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Electronics and Communication Engineering; Information Technology; Mathematical and Computational Sciences; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Mining Engineering; Physics; School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Management; and Career Development Centre (formerly Placement & Training).

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Karnataka, Surathkal provides a two-year full-time MBA programme. The PG course admission process is entrance-based. Applicants may apply if they have a valid CAT score. It is one of India's most esteemed institutions. Moreover, the highest and average package offered in NITK BTech placement 2022 was INR 45.03 LPA and INR 23.03 LPA, respectively. The technology institute is ranked 10 as per the NIRF rankings among the top “Engineering” colleges in India.
