The Bar Council of India (BCI) in India denies recognition to students who want to practice law through either distance or online B.A. LL.B. programs. To practice law as a lawyer within courtrooms students need to study a full-time B.A. LL.B. programme through regular courses at a college approved by BCI.

The pursuit of legal education for non-courtroom practice can be achieved through distance education Diploma and certificate programs which universities offer in law fields such as corporate law and cyber law and intellectual property rights. The legal degree programs offered through online or distance learning by NLU Delhi together with IGNOU and Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning differ from the standards needed to become a practicing lawyer which requires full-time B.A. LL.B. education.
