Well, you start by very carefully selecting the field in which you want to become a research scientist. It's okay to take different courses in your first and second year of college to explore this. However, you should have an idea of your undergraduate and graduate majors by the beginning of 3rd year. You don't have to do major in the same thing as an undergraduate and graduate student. However, if you don't, the majors should complement each other in a meaningful way. Do well as an undergraduate and get into a good post-graduate programme. Once you finish, you might continue in academia or you might go into an industry. That entirely depends on the fields that you choose and the economy at the time. Try to always be inquisitive and sceptical (good traits of a research scientist). Be willing to continually learn new things since Science is moving forward very quickly.
