In India, if you study (at least Masters) statistics from some dumb place you will end up being Maths teacher in some high school or at most join government (CSO, NSSO, etc. ). Via ISS exam which is good only in terms of money. If you do your Masters from good universities or institute, there is a huge scope of job and research. Well, "good" research option is limited to India, but people studying statistics as their major subject is very low too. About the job: all analytics farms hire statisticians (from IBM to TCS to EXL), same holds for the biggest financial farms like Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley. You could get jobs on banking (mostly IB) sectors like Barclays, Citi Bank, HSBC etc. At least all these companies conduct campus interview at Indian Statistical Institute, one of the finest place to study statistics. However, in many of the universities (e. g. BHU, Lucknow University, Meerut University etc. ), they teach * in name of statistics. So don't expect to get some decent job after doing statistics from there. Basically no body, other that GOI gives a damn to those degrees. Sorry if I am offending someone telling the truth.

The course content is such that it covers a little bit of every engineering discipline, before focusing on the core Electronics and Instrumentation subjects. This helps in making a switch to other disciplines (eg. Computer Science) if anyone wishes to. Many students from this stream go to good universities abroad to pursue MS/ Ph.D. in their desired fields of interest, every year. There are seats in the IITs and IISC too, where it is relatively more difficult to get in, because of the fierce competition. Jobs prospects:
- PSUs recruit through GATE. One can appear for GATE in 'Instrumentation'paper and make himself eligible to apply for PSUs like NTPC, IOCL, BPCL, GAIL, ONGC, etc. - I have seen my seniors getting placed in electronics companies like Texas Instruments, Cadence Design systems and giving a good competition to the ECE guys. - There are also companies, which come looking for Instrumentation engineers in particular, like Foster-Wheeler, CAIRN India, LINDE, etc. - Moreover, during Campus placements E & I guys are generally allowed to sit in almost every type of company that is coming for recruitment: From Coding to Consultancy, Financial services to Decision Sciences. Almost all.
