UGC NET exam is conducted for 84 different subjects including sociology. To be eligible for NET exam, you should complete Masters degree with minimum 55% aggregate marks (5% relaxation available for other than general category). Yes, you can pursue PG in Sociology softer completing graduation in Physics. Because to apply for PG, you just need to qualify the graduation. As you ask, are you eligible for UGC NET so you can appear for the UGC NET exam in your qualifying year of post graduation or after qualify it. You have to be score at least 55% aggregate marks in Masters to be eligible for the NET exam. For pursuing Ph.D, you must have completed Master's degree in Sociology.
You will also have to qualify the UGC ENT Exam to become a research or to pursue Ph.D.
So, if you are not UGC NET qualified candidate, then fill up the UGC NET Application form and start preparing for it.
The UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is conducted twice a year by NTA (National Testing Agency).

Yes, you can apply for the National Eligibility Test.
Here are some of the eligibility criteria before appearing in the National Eligibility Test which you must follow:
The university and college by which you have completed Master's degree must be a recognised university by UGC or it must be UGC approved. There is no age related criteria or limit in the UGC NET exam for lectureship posts.
You must complete Masters or post graduation with at least 55 % marks (50% marks for female and reserved category candidates).
